A Dental Assistant plays an important role in the daily functions of a dental office.  A dental assistant may perform clerical or chair-side duties, sterilize equipment or carry out procedures in a dental laboratory.  In larger clinics, dental assistants usually work in one specific aspect; however, in small offices, the dental assistant might multi-task.  Clerical duties include greeting patients, scheduling, maintaining records, billing and telephone reception.  Chair-side responsibilities may consist of handing instruments to the dentist upon instructions, updating dental charts and preparing dental materials for dentistry procedures.  Dental assistants who work in a laboratory make impressions, fabricate mouth guards, retainers and other appliances.  Sterilization is an important factor.  OSHA standards have to be maintained and instruments and dental treatment areas must be meticulously sanitary.
